Established in 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) promises to make the continent a modern, industrialised, united and influential actor on the world stage. An Africa that no longer exhausts its mineral wealth to export it to foreign markets, but instead industrialises its economies, stimulates the entrepreneurial spirit of its fast-growing young population, and gives its people the chance of a better life — that is a dream whose hour has come. A vast market of 1.3 billion consumers, the AfCFTA aims to use trade as an engine of growth and sustainable development by stimulating intra-African commerce. The AfCFTA is more than an undertaking to remove customs duties, cut red tape or simplify customs controls. It is a unique opportunity to create an integrated market on a continental scale, and an essential step towards building “the Africa we want”, in line with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063[1].
AUDICO’s experts guide and support States, businesses and entrepreneurs across the continent so that they can draw the greatest benefit from the AfCFTA. Our work in this field includes awareness-raising and training:
- Help in mastering the fundamental principles of the AfCFTA, the better to frame development policies and strategies and to design public or private projects that conform to them.
- Support in reshaping education and training, the two pillars on which the AfCFTA’s implementation rests if African countries are to benefit from it.
- Support in designing structuring value-chain development projects within the AfCFTA framework.
- Support in developing financing mechanisms for the basic public infrastructure the AfCFTA requires, through public-private partnership (PPP) contracts.
- Assistance and support to businesses in applying the fundamental principles of the AfCFTA to their planning, growth, development and expansion across Africa.
- Assistance and support in identifying the potential export markets and lower-cost sources of supply that the AfCFTA opens to African businesses.
- Assistance and support to businesses seeking the finance needed to build the capacity to meet continental demand.
- Assistance and support to businesses in developing and applying management tools — business plans, cost accounting and the like — and systems of organisation that anchor them in the African market.
- Training.
